Everyone needs a $1 Million umbrella policy. You probably need a higher amount of coverage if you have any of the following:
- Accumulated assets
- Swimming pool
- Cell phone
- Swings, skateramps or trampolines
- Home and/or a secondary home
Your auto and homeowners policies may be adequate to take care of smaller liability judgments but how about a large costly claim? In this case, you will wish you had an umbrella policy. An Umbrella policy is an additional amount of liability insurance that will kick in after your underlying auto and home limits have been exhausted. A multi-vehicle accident that is deemed to be your fault has the potential to cause much more damage than it sounds. If you are currently carrying $500,000 worth of liability on your auto policy but a Judge awards $1 Million in damages to an injured 3rd party, there is a $500,000 gap in coverage that will have to come from somewhere. Without this coverage, a families personal assets (cash, savings, investments, personal property, etc.) could be at risk. An umbrella policy can put a large claim at ease.
